Term: Covenants

Promised written into loan agreements that certain activities will or will not take place. A loan or credit instrument found to be in breach of a covenant need to automatically restructured in favor of the lender. An example of a covenant might be a company missing a loan payment or selling an asset without a lender’s approval. As in: I’m worried that our portfolio company is getting close to blowing some of its covenants.
