Term: Separate account

Unlike a co-mingled account in which the capital from multiple investors is pooled into an investment vehicle and then committed to a series of different private equity funds a separate account involves the capital of a single typically large investor managed by a single investment consultant who makes decisions as to how the capital is invested. Increasingly popular in private equity and real estate asset classes. As in: That consultant just landed a huge separate account with the state pension fund.
